my big 2009 stock picks – new option practice trades going into new year

hello. how has your stock trading been going these days? currently I’m reading the Dick Davis Dividend. a big fat book with a lot of “i don’t knows” in it. i’m about only 30 pages in to it. definitely a slow read and waiting for the good stuff. i’ve never known a writer so interested in summer camp. i couldn’t stand the ones i was a counselor at so i suppose its how much you dig it.

for my 2009 big stock picks (For myself):

i have a strong conviction that X Steel (X) currently at $38 is going back up up up. it just recently broke its downtrend and slow like a crater tippy toeing back up. i could be wrong and like mr. davis “i don’t know” because there are so many “ifs” in the market that change circumstances, but for now if i bet my life on it i’d buy X call options and the stock (covered calls). even in a slow economy we are still building and so is many growing countries such as china and india. other stocks i see ripe are Apple (AAPL) at $98. it recently hit $110. i see everyone with an iPod and many people i know and people i meet talk about how they want to buy an apple computer. when you go into their mall show room retail stores its stuffed with helpful workers and masses of interested potential and current apple fans. i think another star is AMAT Technologies (AMAT). currently at $10 it is one of those innovative companies and with obama’s energy bill it should strike some wicked fat solar contracts. southwestern energy company (SWN) is always knocking its head with the trend. if you look at the charts its broke its trend and has been moving sideways. its currently on its low so i expect it to move past $30 again currently at $28+ a share. lastly the credit card companies Mastercard (MA) and Visa (V) are both on a tidal wave and likely profiting from this credit mess and consumers going back to credit card use not home equity for all those christmas presents this year for the kiddies. V at $52 still new to the stock market exchange is likely to move quicker past $60 i think.

for my stock trades i’m currently still up +690% since august 2008. if i would have sold out of my last option trades sooner i would have been up more but because i neglected them i lost over 130% on those trades, but that’s okay i’m back in practicing again and that is what counts. i just need to keep practicing even when I see a stock like HOKU at $2.89 and I want to be in it. the more practicing i do the closer and sooner i will get to my goal of understand my stocks better to trade them with less risk and what pisses me off the most is telling me trading in the stock market is gambling. it isn’t if you take real calculated risks which i am practicing on this year.

How to deal with your stock portfolio losing value

Interesting subject because learning how to deal with your stock portfolio losing value can be a very important experience and tool for success. I’ve read plenty of money management books, but when it comes to losses it seems the only thing you can do is take a step back, observe, and react to the current situation. What stocks do you own? Are they in industries that are losing gobbs of money and going bankrupt (currently financials and auto). Consider using the warren buffett method or buy staple stocks such as an industry like utilities such as General Electric (GE). At least until we get better energy we will always need electric companies, gas companies, oil, natural gas, and soon hydrogen power such as Ballard Power (BLDP) or HOKU solar (HOKU).

As for emotional pain I say buy a big delicious pizza and treat yourself just because you are investing. Now don’t get fat and eat notoriously with the more negative gains you receive, but know just like a good treat bad things do finally come to an end and you will reap rewards by being patient. I suggest even punching a boxing bag because #1 all the energy you’ll be letting out will make you dizzy and forget about your financial problems #2 it helps you feel better and stay in fit and #3 it will make the meal you can still afford more delicious.

Financial strategies you can think of if you want to switch some of your money during a down market at least I would do woudl be tax liens, buying a rental properties, and shorting stocks or buying up put options on your stocks that are falling then sell off the options once the market changes its mood.

Learning how to deal with your emotions, appetite, and financial strategies should make you feel all around more confident about yourself and your future. Positive thoughts. Yeah…! At least it does for me losing tons of money on a portfolio or option position I need to immediately rethink my strategy. I’ve had to do this numerous times on business ventures I got into and even relationships.

wow the market is moving – reversal candles, crammer’s big mouth is right

I haven’t even looked at my charts for almost a month now and I can already visualize in my mind what is happening. First I can see one big bullish candle down and a second big bullish candle parallel to the down candle. This creates a tunnel/sandwhich like effect that for the most part is rare and shows a change in buying/selling.

More surprisingly HOKU under $8 has not been moving at all and just has fell instead of move like big stocks FSLR which currently just swings up and down 10-20 pts a day it seems like. I’m going to have to make one big journal entry about all these big moves and economic policy decisions going on plus what happens to Bear Sterns (BSC). Wow. I would have never of thought that company would of feel to just $3 and get bought out by JPM for only $200 million dollars. Any billionaire status entrepreneur right now can almost buy a mega company cheap that is in trouble. I’m surprised Bill Gates with Microsoft isn’t buying everything up to dominate and monopolize on the market place.

AAPL through all of these hard moves has actually been pretty supportive in the 120’s so this just might becomes its 52 week low for the following year and finally move past $200 for good unless a stocksplit happens by Steve Jobs by surprise.

I’m seeing huge moves happen daily during one of the most hardest times to trade. I have to admit its very lucrative in daily plays, but would be very dangerous staying in a trade no longer then 1 day right now due to the extremely swingy choppy markets. I don’t think our market has hit the bottom that fast. Home sellers are still having problems selling their homes and consumers are still resisting buying and starting to talk again about how risky the market is to buy stocks. This is not bullish talk in my opinion from people who create the profits to drive stocks up.

Living on the boat has been swell. I’m about out of money to fix the boat. Other boat owners have suggested just living in it and doing nothing to it. I’d really like to sail it and go on trips, but it needs a LOT of work to be seaworthy. So I guess I’ll see how far I get with what I can pay for and do to the boat.

Can you explain the solar sector to me? Gained back 70% of my position in First Solar (FSLR) today. Nope I’m not out yet!

Okay. If you are like a stock wizard or professional and for some crazy reason your reading my posts that show me notoriously multiple times over I’m very wrong on stock directions then please comment on the stocks in the solar sector. All my charts showed First Solar (FSLR currently @ $189 + up to $191 after hours up +10%) being technically going up. All the charts had a smooth easy riding sloping uptrend which broke the daily downtrend.

The following day I got hammered losing around 40% of the capital in the trade or $400. Yes I could of sold out and kept $600 to stay alive for my next trade, but there was no reason for FLSR to go down. It was just negative market news bring down the stock. Furthermore FSLR dived all the way down to $165! What a Put play that would have been if I would have just changed positions since I saw realistically the day after I bought it the stock was showing a “dark cloud” a bearish signal showing downwards movement. So I saw my option price go down to losing 90% of its value. Just recently yesterday it broke the 55 minute downtrend and going up again today I’m back at 70% the value of my 1 contract or around $700. In after hours trading FSLR moved up another 1% or +2 pts to $191. I bought the contract at $196. Now that time is strongly against me and I haven’t sold out within 2-3 days of my planned trade I’m forced to see if FSLR will move over $200 as planned going into 4Q results as planned on Wednesday Feb. 13th. This CALL trade was based on movement going into results. Analysts (ZACKS) are currently predicting a surprise for First Solar results. In the position that it doesn’t given stellar surprising results this stock could be extremely punished or shoots up another 10%. I currently need the boost to sell out of my GTC at $20. I’m currently 13 points away in my options so technically the stock would have to move like 20 points or around to the price of $210 within 2 days. Yes, not realistic, I agree too. So if it does spike again tomorrow the day before the results I am going to sell out likely either breaking even or +10-20% ROI. If bad market news comes out and pushes FSLR down I might be forced to hold it through the results. I’d rather miss a move then kiss all my $1000 trade money good by.

Is it that ZACK’s predicts a surprise in FSLR which made it move +10% today? Did buyers just jump in with the stock pushed down a lot? I noticed HOKU at $10.21 also moved around +8% today. I can also agree solar stocks are super volatile right now, but what moved them for these past two days starting this week. It is driving me nuts. I think the next $1000 trade I do will be on a much less volatile stock like NUE, AAPL, EOG, SWN, RIG, BAC. These stocks do move with swings but not -40 pts down then +40pts up in about only 1 week like FSLR has. Good grief! One day when I can watch the market all day I will trade on such a big move and move with the direction in real time. I’m sure many traders are rich just trading such a move off FSLR. Also coming up is Nutri Systems (NTRI @ $24) earnings. The stock has been shorted heavily although with a peg of like .40 and still a lot of growth because diets are a fad. Diets have been going on for centuries! NTRI actually might surprise investors on results and this stock could zoom up in price. All of the damage has already hammered the stock down with bad news and bears eating at it. In a few days analyst could be wrong and institutions buy into the stock again. This stock was in the $70’s before it tanked. It is currently at $24 hitting a low of $20. One of my strategic plans is to buy CALL options on it and go through earnings with only $100 in the trade or 1 contract. Something very small of my $1000 so just in case the stock blows or doesn’t move I will not lose much.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) @ $155 falls -10% after hours to $137 on earnings, my reasoning on AAPL

Apple Inc. (AAPL) earnings disappointment was pretty predictable with all these other big tech players falling also after good earnings. I don’t like to say “I told you so”, but this stock has been ready to fall hard. From the beginning of the year 2008 this stock has just trembled at every market moving news. Since it did not move UP into its big deal Mac Expo and analyst were boo-hooing the new products that should of made ANY Apple investor worried. Other Apple speculators are saying, “I’m buying AAPL on sell off” well I think they are very wrong on that decision. When a stock has fallen, then falls harder, you are going to buy it on the rush of a sell of? Are you crazy? For a prized stock that is falling there is good reason not to be buying.

This sums it up quoted in an associated press article:

“Apple’s guidance has historically been conservative, but such a divergence from Wall Street’s estimate rattled investors already skittish about the economy.”

“Tuesday’s stock plunge was likely worsened, Snorek said, by the exodus of a large number of investors who had hoped Apple’s stock would be a refuge from the economic pressures hurting the overall stock market.” – Jordan Robertson, AP Technology Writer

One good point is that Apple Inc. guidance is ALWAYS “conservative” so since they told investors their outlook would show some slower growth (duh!!! look at whats going on with other consumer growth stocks and their partner AT&T (T)) no wonder why AAPL dropped after earnings (just like the stock does many times over). Now will AAPL’s stock fall more? I’m sure of it. Will it continue on big charts to move up with hot products? Most definitely. This is a short-term hard down move, but likely to continue so if I was you or myself I wouldn’t be in a buying position of Apple Inc. anytime soon until the economy shows some recovery and Tech stocks show a real correction and real buying from bigger institutions. AT&T reported consumers slowed on buying bigger plans and defaulted on normal ones. Hello! This just proves that slow growth should happen on the iPhone since consumers can already not affoard their normal cellular plans.

Look at Hansen Foods (HANS) stocks has been falling with its major Monster Energy Drink brans, especially big in the X-Games, has been falling hard even with a peg of 1.06. This stock still has a bright growth future, but now are teenagers buying less $2 energy drinks? (or is it really the parents lower on cash so don’t buy the more expensive brand drinks?)

Oil prices at the pump haven’t changed much. I think most automobile consumersr are getting used to $3 gasoline prices which are liked to get a boost again with increasing oil prices that shouldn’t slow down anytime soon which will keep boosting profits for stocks like Southwestern Energy (SWN @ 51) and Ocean Outriggers (RIG @ $124).

I think solar stocks like First Solar (FSLR) and HOKU Scientific (HOKU @ $9.20) are likely to fall until a new President is in place and makes a real energy plan to keep boosting production and make solar “special” again. If you have been reading the reports 2009 will be a HUGE year for solar companies just because by then their new production plants will be made and producing tons of polycillicon very wanted in the industry going up in price making these small solar companies worth and valued you more in stock price (then they currently are).

But back to Apple Inc. I like the new laptop Air, I might even buy me one because they are the first to use flash memory for the harddrive. If you aren’t a computer nerd this means faster processing times, less harddrive crashes, and more efficient system. This could be a huge seller. Who cares that it is thin. It uses a flash harddrive and of course very sleek and hot looking. I don’t know how far Apple Inc. will drop, but I’m think below $100 (which would create a peg of 1.00). Where do I think it will be by November 2008 earnings? Hmm. Depends if these rate cuts do the trick and creates more money so people keep buying gadgets. If Apple continues to take more market share there is no reason its stock won’t stop charging pass $200 again. I think realistically Apple might do a 2:1 stocksplit since they just lost $40 billion in share holder value, maybe a split at $100, might get people think to buy it at $50 is cheap (even though its the same price/value). I like Apple. It really trys to innovate and create “new” and that is a company anyone wants to own. I should note the downgrade it got today just throws “warning signs” for future downtrend. Downgrade on Apple? Are you crazy analyst, well not so crazy at least for now…

new trend chart technical analysis for January 11, 2008 stocks

I’ve got the time to upload some new trend charts I’m studying to see them just click on the flickr trend picture column or click here to see my flickr page of all my trend charts.

trend charts include: AAPL, ATVI, C, DKS, FXI, HOKU, HANS, MA, INP, TTM, YHOO, GOOG, RIG, SWN, RIMM

check out INP. I’ve seen this stock go from $48 to now $112. Like FXI I think it still has much room to grow with small downs and big moves up with India’s major growth. I believe TTM will start to follow india stocks with its new plan for $2500 car.

check out AAPL. will it get support at current price levels ($172)? major trend will be breached soon if Mac Expo 08′ and earning on january 18th do not give investors reasons to keep charging the stock up. If you look at any other tech stock right now BIDU, GOOG, RIMM charts show in favor of major downtrend to form if negative opinions continue on the economy.

btw – only 70 pages left of Alan Greenspans book! great book and very insightful.

sold out of HOKU call option up +100% – in AAPL call option on big dip

I successfully sold out of HOKU JAN 15 Calls @ .80 (bought at .40). It is currently trading at $1.00-1.50 which was where my initial GTC order was at but I reduced my sell price to get out of it quicker. Currently in AAPL JAN 220 CALL at .90. I would of liked to buy it at the end of the day down -14pts at around .50, but I don’t have that favorable time to wait, so I bought in it down -6pts at $190 at .90. My current GTC order is up .50 cents at $1.40 in stead of up $1.00 more. My plan is for it to bounce back up to $200 to sell me out quickly in the process going into 2008 mac expo and earnings Jan 18.

now for a complaint. something I usually don’t do. i officially dislike Wells Fargo banking customer service. I want to go to their call center and fart until my face is blue, then punch them all, then close out my account. They make it incredibly hard for a military member who goes to many port calls to take a block off a credit card and checking account. They know the account holder is active military on a ship although they treat you like a theft criminal. I’m like “you fucking bastards, if I was a theft I wouldn’t know everything I’m telling you, sorry I don’t know my account number I never have, but here is everything else, where I am, and all my current balances”. Those bastards piss me off. Well they prevented a bill from being paid, a storage bill, so now I have to send a bill pay check from another bank just to pay it so my shit doesn’t get auctioned off while on a patrol PROTECTING THEIR FUCKING ASSHOLES. as you can see this stresses me a bit out. well cheers!
